Why Change?
A lot of law enforcement officers have asked why Randy, Rickey and I started a new organization. It’s simple and yet a little complicated. Like every other law enforcement officer in this state we too have been disappointed in the direction that our profession has taken in the last ten years. It seems everyday that someone or some group wants to take a shot at each and every one who wears the uniform of public service. As law enforcement officers we receive very little compensation for our efforts. If we’re lucky the governmental entity gives us a 3% - 5% raise each year. We have even more luck when there is an insurance premium increase of only 10% - 15%. This happens over and over again, year after year. How are we ever going to get ahead like this? The truth of the matter is that we continue to fall behind. Yet these same entities want us to do more and more as part of our job descriptions. They expect us to be better educated and, in most cases, at our own expense. They want us to work miracles in a profession where most of the needs are of a crisis nature. We are required to expand our efforts with the demand of reducing our law enforcement budget as though we are selling cars and not trying to add to the quality of life by protecting our communities. Well, miracles are not for the asking and are not handed out upon request. There are limits to what we can do.
When we looked at what the current organizations were accomplishing we were extremely disappointed. Remember we were leaders in another organization. Once we became disappointed with the direction, we each decided that each of you deserve better and more than you were getting for your hard-earned money. When we tried to change the direction and get things back to where they started we were met with major resistance. At the same time membership for other law enforcement representation organizations was and is declining. Apparently we are not the only law enforcement officers feeling this way. We have fresh ideas and we decided to act on them. The results of those ideas are a new organization putting you first and above the personal needs of any one individual, CEO or president of any Police Association.
We will continue to lead and assess our progress and make changes based on our results. But rest assured that this organization will not be stagnant! We want fresh ideas. We want you the law enforcement officers of this state to give us your ideas. No matter what they are. We are growing, developing and meeting the changing needs of an old-style law enforcement profession without your new ideas. You are a professional and deserve the best representation known. We are that! We will serve you and meet your needs. We will step out in front when others fall behind. We want you to get the respect you deserve as law enforcement professionals.
We can accomplish more as it relates to our employers. While it is a fact that they have not been overly eager to do for law enforcement we feel sure that we will remain on the mind of each and every government leader through our intense lobbying efforts to improve your quality of life.
We do offer many fresh ideas. This organization is working on a new retirement option for you that doesn’t take benefits away from you, yet gives you better options. We are dedicated to helping each of you develop career paths that you desire. We are going to sponsor training that promotes career development. We are serious about raising the professionalism of our profession through the efforts of our and your North Carolina Sheriff Police Alliance. We believe that the key to better benefits and pay is being recognized as a profession and professionals. We know that change does not come easy, Change never is but change is good when you have more control over what you can say and do without the fear of being ridiculed for your way of thinking. Join us and help us change the face of the law enforcement profession and law enforcement professionals in North Carolina. Together we will change the way you are treated and represented by standing for and with you in a time of crisis!
God bless ya’ll,
