Christmas 2009

Well, it’s Christmas time again and then the New Year. This year has really flown by.  At least it has for me. I am almost prepared for Christmas. About as prepared as I can be before December 24th. No matter how well I plan I am always out on Christmas Eve doing some last minute shopping. It never fails. Of course I am not the only one. I always have plenty of company. I am also working night shift this Christmas. I will be out there with everyone else that couldn’t get off. I will be thinking of family and friends and most of all you!

I have spent a lot of time lately thinking about our law enforcement community. I keep thinking that we keep asking our community to do more and more. All of us in the system whether we are cops, deputies, jailers, communicators, or probation officers have to know and do more. Our jobs keep getting busier and busier. It keeps more and more dangerous. Don’t take my word for it, just look at the national news coverage. Just recently during the same week we had a guy that shot a Durham Police officer get a six month active sentence and we had a Martin County deputy shot and killed. Now I know six months ain’t enough time for shooting an officer. What’s wrong with the world? If we keep giving out light sentences for assaults on officers then we are going to keep having an escalation the number of assaults on officers.  This year across the United States we have had 44 officers shot and killed. Fifteen of those were killed involved in multiple officer shootings, like the four officers killed in Washington. I don’t have the answer but I am sure working collectively we could come up with one. That is what makes organizations so valuable. It allows us to come together for a purpose. We don’t have to come up with all the answers by ourselves. We can work together to solve problems. We must become closer to one another in the future if we want to have a say so in our future.

I hope everyone enjoyed our last newsletter. As you can see we are concentrating more on articles that can assist with training. We want to do more of that in the future. We want to be a complete organization for our members. We know that together we can change the face of law enforcement in North Carolina. I have met a lot of the officers in the next generation of law enforcement and I am impressed with how much smarter they keep getting. They are a lot more aware of what’s going on globally than my generation ever was. The law enforcement future in North Carolina looks brighter than ever. We just need to make sure that we work together to change the profession. We need to stay connected.  The North Carolina Sheriff Police Alliance can facilitate that.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

God bless y’all,

Andy Miller, President
